Cost of Living - City by City, Real Numbers

New Zealand is expensive. Anyone who tells you otherwise has not paid Auckland rent recently. But the costs are manageable on a skilled professional's salary - if you choose the right city and plan your budget before you land, not after.

First Month: The Most Expensive Month

Before your first New Zealand pay cheque arrives, you need to cover:

  • Bond deposit (up to 4 weeks' rent)
  • Two weeks' advance rent
  • Initial furniture and kitchen setup: NZD 1,500–3,000
  • SIM card and internet setup: NZD 100–200
  • Initial grocery stock: NZD 400–600

Plan for NZD 10,000–18,000 available before your first working day - above your ongoing monthly budget. This is the most common financial stress point for Indian arrivals.

Groceries: Indian Stores vs Mainstream Supermarkets

New Zealand's main supermarkets are Woolworths NZ (previously Countdown), New World, and Pak'nSave. Pak'nSave is consistently the cheapest of the three - warehouse format, no loyalty card gimmicks.

Indian grocery stores in South Auckland (Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Otahuhu) and Wellington's Newtown area stock Indian staples at significantly lower prices than mainstream supermarkets:

  • 10 kg basmati rice at an Indian grocer: NZD 18–25
  • 10 kg basmati rice at Woolworths: NZD 30–45 if they stock it at all
  • Fresh curry leaves, methi, toor dal varieties: available only at Indian grocers

Many Indian families split their shopping: Pak'nSave for vegetables, fruit, dairy, and meat; Indian grocer once a week for pantry staples.

Tipping

New Zealand has no tipping culture. Restaurants, cafes, taxis, and salons do not expect tips. The price shown is the price you pay.

Annual Cost Estimates

ProfileAnnual cost (NZD)
Single professional, shared accommodationNZD 35,000–45,000
Couple, no childrenNZD 60,000–75,000

These include housing, food, transport, utilities, and reasonable leisure - but not mortgage repayments, private school fees, or regular trips to India.
