Your Indian driving licence is valid in New Zealand for 12 months from your date of arrival. After 12 months, you must convert to a New Zealand licence.
Unlike UK or Australian licence holders, Indians cannot simply swap their licence. The conversion requires:
Budget 8–12 weeks from when you start the process. Practical test appointments in Auckland book out several weeks in advance. Start by month 8, not month 11.
New Zealand drives on the left - same as India. Speed limits: 50 km/h urban, 100 km/h open road. Roundabouts give way to vehicles already in the roundabout. Drink-driving enforcement is strict with random breath testing.
Apply for your NZ licence through NZTA.
Your Indian CIBIL score does not transfer to New Zealand. You start with no NZ credit history. New Zealand uses Equifax NZ, Illion, and Centrix.
Build credit by using a NZ credit card responsibly - pay the full balance each month. Pay all bills on time. Avoid multiple credit applications in a short period. A clean NZ credit history over 12–24 months is needed for larger financial decisions, particularly mortgage applications.
