Indian passport holders cannot enter New Zealand without a pre-approved visa. There is no visa on arrival and no NZeTA (Electronic Travel Authority) available to Indian nationals. Every visit - for tourism, study, work, or settlement - needs a visa applied for before you leave India.

New Zealand's visa system is clearly organised. You pick the category that fits your purpose. Here are all the main pathways.

For tourism, family visits, or short courses under three months.

What you need:

• Valid passport with at least 3 months of validity beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
• Return or onward ticket
• Proof of funds: at least NZD 1,000 per month of stay (NZD 400 per month if accommodation is pre-paid)
• Bank statements covering the last 3–6 months
• Proof of ties to India: employer letter, property ownership, family documentation

Fee: NZD 441 (approximately INR 24,000 at current rates)

Processing time: Now averaging 5 working days in 2025 - down from several weeks in 2024

Approval rate: Around 72% for Indian applicants in 2024. The most common reason for rejection is insufficient proof of ties to India - visa officers need to be confident you will return.

You cannot work in New Zealand on a Visitor Visa. Remote work for a non-New Zealand employer is generally permitted.

For study programmes lasting more than three months at an approved institution.

What you need:

• Offer letter from an approved NZ education provider
• Proof of tuition fees paid or capacity to pay
• Living cost evidence: NZD 15,000 per year
• English language test (typically IELTS 5.5–6.5 depending on course level)
• Health insurance for the duration of study

Work rights (updated November 2025): Students can now work 25 hours per week during term time, increased from 20 hours. Full-time work during scheduled breaks is permitted.

Post-study pathway (2026 update): New Zealand introduced a Short Term Graduate Work Visa - up to six months of open work rights after graduation for students who do not yet have an employer-sponsored visa. Minimum NZD 5,000 in funds required. After that, graduates who complete a bachelor's degree or above over at least two years receive an open work visa for up to three years.

The main work visa for Indian professionals with a job offer from a New Zealand employer. This replaced the old Essential Skills Work Visa in 2022. As of March 2026, more than 185,000 AEWVs have been approved since launch. Over 28,000 employers hold current accreditation. Around 80,000 AEWV holders are working in New Zealand right now.

For skilled workers in specific shortage occupations. Offers either direct residence (Tier 1) or a two-year work-to-residence pathway (Tier 2). Full details in the Green List section.

New Zealand's points-based residence pathway for skilled workers. From August 2026, two new pathways open under this category. Full details in the permanent residency section.

• Partner of a New Zealander Visa: For spouses or de facto partners of NZ citizens or residents. Evidence of a genuine, stable relationship is assessed thoroughly.
• Parent Resident Visa: For parents of NZ citizens or residents. Subject to annual ballot and significant wait times.
• Dependent Child Visa: For children of NZ residents or citizens.
